Book Cars & Booker Stalling: Hobbit parties, readathons, Proust, reading critically-Ep.10

A 30-minute tangent episode in which we discuss how Kaisha’s Booker reading is going, her thoughts on The Underground Railroad, and the massive pile of fantasy novels she fell into. We circle around to Proust, our favorite classics, Stream of Consciousness, and why we read Faulkner. I talk about subverting narrative elements and the one rule you can’t break as a writer. Listen as I rage over Plainspeak and Kaisha talks about reading critically.

Welcome to Read.Write.Repeat.

This month we will be giving away an advanced reader copy of The Vengeance of Mothers by Jim Fergus. We explain how to enter toward the end of the show notes.

Booker Update:

Kaisha’s not doing so well on reading through her list. She fell off of it and onto a pile of Fantasy novels. She just finished an amazing fantasy novel, Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames.

She’s starting a new project on September the 22nd: Rereading all of Lord of the Rings.

Kaisha preferred Homegoing to the Underground Railroad.

Proust Tangent

Proust breaks all the rules, except the one rule you can’t break: your story must reveal some truth about humanity.

We also talk about Woolf, Faulkner, and, of Course, Melville.

Faulkner and Proust were the first authors I read who made me feel like it was okay to write the way I sound in my head. Now I’m learning the difference between intentionally and unintentionally subverting narrative elements. That’s the tricky part. Writing tip: until you fully understand why a rule exists, you don’t belong breaking it.

Kelsey’s Dislike of Plainspeak

I hate certain words. Thou is one of them.

We discuss strange descriptions of characters that make them seem older than they are.

We fall upon unsusal descriptors that just don’t to it for us.
