Fall Reads & Creepy Sensations: Atmosphere, sinister neighbors, cozy reads, lurker spider

A 30-minute tangent episode in which we discuss our favorite cozy fall reads. Both Kaisha and Kelsey are wimps when it comes to being scared. Listen as they share funny lurker spider stories, discuss the importance of atmosphere, and swap tips and tricks for creating mood in writing.

Kaisha’s Recommendations:

I love books which can bring me into a creepy atmosphere and state of mind completely:

Books which I am excited to read this fall:

  • The Half Drowned King Linnea Hartsuyker An exhilarating saga of the Vikings that conjures a brutal, superstitious, and thrilling ninth-century world and the birth of a kingdom—the debut installment in a historical literary trilogy that combines the bold imagination and sweeping narrative power of Game of Thrones, Vikings, and Outlander.
  • Laurus by Eugene Vodolazkin
  • The Man Who Spoke Snakish by Andrus Kivirahk

Kelsey’s Recommendations:

My favorites bring the fictional world to life vividly:

  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Taylor, Laini
  • Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber
  • Brother Odd–Dean Koontz
    • “How passionately we love everything that cannot last: the dazzling crystallory of winter, the spring in bloom, the fragile flight of butterflies, crimson sunsets, a kiss, and life.”
  • Wuthering Heights–Emily Bronte
    • “My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I’m well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Healthcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.”
  • Little Women–Louisa May Alcott
    • “You are the gull, Jo, strong and wild, fond of the storm and the wind, flying far out to sea, and happy all alone.”

Atmosphere is created by connecting the reader to something emotional in their lives, one that calls forth something specific, like Thanksgiving.

  • I was trying to write then and I found the greatest difficulty, aside from knowing truly what you really felt, rather than what you were supposed to feel, and had been taught to feel, was to put down what really happened in action; what the actual things were which produced the emotion that you experienced. –Hemingway
    • Focus on engaging the senses.
    • Pay attention–What are those things that evoke the atmosphere for you?
